Prescription Drugs & Their Effect on the Environment

In the United States today, there is a rising trend in prescription drug use. More than 3 billion prescriptions are filled by Americans each year, with 6.4 million reporting non-medical use of prescription drugs. When taken improperly, prescription medications can have serious consequences on human health. In addition to this, improper disposal of medications negatively impacts the environment, causing by-products to be released into waterways from hospitals, drug plants, factories, and homes. After this program, participants will better be able to understand the manufacturing process of pharmaceuticals, recognize the environmental impact of waste and medications that enter the environment, and be able to identify safe practices for proper medicine handling, storage, and disposal.
